RSA seatbelt sheriff to visit Donegal schools on National Child Safety Day

Today, Friday, October 10, is National Child Safety Day - pre-schools received Beep Beep packs with over 40,000 high visibility vests

Local community policing gardaí will visit creches to educate children about road safety.

The seatbelt sheriff from the RSA will also visit some of the Donegal schools.

Today, Friday, October 10, is National Child Safety Day (Beep Beep Day). Pre-schools pre-ordered Beep Beep packs in early September on the RSA website and the RSA distributed these packs, with over 40,000 high visibility vests to pre-schools nationwide.

As Road Safety Week runs until Sunday, Donegal Gardaí are asking everyone to consider the topic of road safety and think about positive, potentially lifesaving changes they can make.

Gardaí are advising motorists to slow down, refrain from using or holding a mobile phone while driving, wear a seatbelt, and never drive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, all secondary schools attended the ‘Donegal Roadsafe Roadshow’ at the Aura Leisure Centre in Letterkenny.  The young people are shown what happens when a fatal or serious injury collision occurs.

They heard from a member of An Garda Síochána, an ambulance crew member, a Fire Brigade member, a consultant from the emergency Department and a few other guest speakers who bravely shared their own personal stories.

The show sends out a hard-hitting message and explains clearly the horrific reality of a serious collision and what the result of that could be and what it could mean for them and their family.
