Cllr Martin Scanlon asked about speed vans for roads in Cappry
A greater presence of speed vans in locations like Cappry would be “a great deterrent” for speeding motorists, said a Donegal County Councillor.
Cllr Martin Scanlon was speaking at October’s Lifford Stranorlar Municipal District meeting, and highlighted speeding on roads in Cappry as an issue.
He said: “Could we write to the operators of the speed vans about where these vans are located?
"The road in Cappry is being used as a bypass. 60kph is the speed limit, but if it is not being enforced, then it is pointless.
"If we could possibly add these locations to the speed van, it would be a great deterrent."

In response, Donegal County Council’s Area Roads Engineer, Claire McKeever, commented: “Speed vans are an issue. You are very right that they (drivers) do slow down when they see the speed van, and then motorists speed up again. The council does meet with Gardaí about speed vans and locations.
“We have asked Gardaí to monitor speed gun locations because there is definitely an issue with speeding.
“People are trying to get around the traffic in town. We will raise all these locations with Gardaí. We will bring all these locations to the meetings and highlight them to Gardaí.”
