Man arrested in connection to theft spree in Donegal Town area

Five thefts from parked vehicles took place in Donegal Town area

A man has been arrested in connection with a series of thefts from unsecured parked vehicles in Donegal Town over the course of October 26 and October 27.

The man was arrested in the early hours of October 28 in connection with the incidents, and he remains in custody for questioning.

A total of five incidents occurred, with items stolen varying from small amounts of cash, clothing, headwear, costume jewellery and tools.

One incident took place at Orchard Park, Donegal Town, between 2.30am and 3.30am on October 27, with another incident taking place at Ros Mor, Drumroosk West, between 8pm and 11pm that evening.

A vehicle was also entered in the area of O’Maol Chonaire Avenue, Donegal Town, between 9pm on Sunday, October 26, and 7.30am on Monday, October 27.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have travelled in the areas where incidents occurred with a dash-cam to make footage available to Gardaí as part of their ongoing investigation.

A statement read: “If anyone in that area or any of the areas mentioned above observed any suspicious activity between the times given, we ask them to contact Gardaí in Ballyshannon Garda Station on 071-9858530 or to contact the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.”

Gardaí also issued warnings advising the public to ensure that vehicles are locked, regardless of whether it is parked in a public place or at home, and that if your vehicle is left unlocked, it makes it very easy for the opportunist criminal to succeed.

It was advised to park in a secure and well-lit location if possible, and not to leave cash or valuables in your vehicle.

Gardaí said: “We understand that it is not possible to remove tools from work vans on a daily basis, but we do advise that any expensive tools should be property marked and all details such as serial numbers and individual markings on them logged and photographed.

“Do not leave any tools in sight within your van, and again, ensure that your work van is locked at all times.

“Always report any suspicious activity around vehicles in your area or in public places to Gardaí immediately.”
