A new TG4 documentary which marks 10 years since the marriage equality referendum in Ireland will feature a wedding in the Donegal Gaeltacht.

Glacaim Leat is a new Irish-language documentary marking a decade since Ireland made history in 2015, when it became the first country in the world to legalise same-sex marriage by public referendum, with 62 per cent of the population voting Yes. Blending love story, political reckoning, and cultural memory, the film follows the people who helped shape that journey and those now living its legacy.

At the heart of this film is the wedding of Seán Mac Ruairí and David McGoldrick, a quiet, deeply personal moment in the Donegal Gaeltacht, a world away from the crowds at Dublin Castle, yet only possible because of them. Around them, the documentary features some of the most influential voices in Ireland’s LGBTQ+ story: Senator David Norris, activist and archivist Tonie Walsh, journalist and activist Lisa Nic an Bhreithimh, and Ruadhán Ó Críodáin, an activist and director of ShoutOut - each reflecting on the past, reckoning with the present, and imagining the future.

Shot over a year and culminating at Dublin Pride 2025, the film is a reminder that Pride is still a protest.

Director of Glacaim, Seán Ó Baoill said: “Glacaim Leat is both a love letter and a warning. As a filmmaker, I wanted to capture the beauty of what’s been won while also showing the fragility of it. Pride can be joyful, but it’s also political. This film holds those truths side by side. It’s about recognising how far we’ve come, while refusing to ignore the growing fear many young LGBTQ+ people are living with today. It’s a thank you to those who paved the way and a call not to turn away from the fight that continues.”

In a climate of rising hate and political rollback, particularly around trans rights, queer families, and an increase in homophobic attacks, Glacaim Leat asks what kind of Ireland we want the next generation to inherit. As more and more young LGBTQ+ people say they no longer feel safe, the film challenges the audience to confront the gap between the promise of 2015 and the reality of today.
