Barney McMonagle had a great love for St Eunan's GAA from his childhood days
St Eunan’s GAA club have paid tribute to the late Barney McMonagle, who has passed away.
Barney, who was 89, worked at the Letterkenny Vocational School, later known as Errigal College, as the school caretaker and was an avid supporter of St Eunan’s, where he was groundsman, and Donegal.
“Barney had a great love for St Eunan's GAA from his childhood days. He never played much as a young man but never missed a game,” the Letterkenny club posted.
“He was only a young boy in 1948 when St Eunan's won our first Senior Championship defeating Ghaoth Dobhair in O'Donnell Park and could recall many details from the day. Barney would go on to fill many positions in the club but he'll be remembered by most as the groundsman at O' Donnell Park for over 50 years.

“Barney also did the gate for all our home games for years. Barney took great pride in always having our facilities in top shape and his attention to detail was legendary. The Tricolour and all Flag had to be perfect or Barney wasn't happy. Barney took great pride in the development at O'Donnell Park in the past 25 years with the new pitch and stand, training pitches and Astro and Ball wall.
“The GAA is built on volunteers and St Eunan's is the great club it is today because of volunteers like Barney Mc Monagle who dedicated his life to his family and St Eunan's GAA. We extend our deepest sympathy to Barney's family, sons Donal, Brendan and Brian, daughter Siobhan and Roisin and all his grandchildren.”
