Sad passing of Phil Rooney CCÉ president, and ‘wonderful musician,’ Seamus McGowan

Phil Rooney CCÉ President, Seamus McGowan passed away peacefully

Founding member and branch President of the Phil Rooney CCÉ, Seamus McGowan has passed away at the age of 97. 

McGowan, of Spa Brae, Kinlough, Clo Leitrim, passed away peacefully at Sligo University Hospital on October 31.

His Funeral Mass will take place on November 3 at St Aidan’s Church, Kinlough. 

McGowan served as President of the Phil Rooney CCÉ and had also served as President of the county Comhaltas. In 2023, during the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Phil Rooney CCÉ, he was presented with a certificate and medallion “as a tribute to the contribution he has made to promoting the music and supporting all of the activities of the branch.”

The Phil Rooney CCÉ posted an online statement sharing their “great sadness” at the news of McGowan’s passing.

Their statement read: “Seamus was a dear friend and a wonderful musician who played the fiddle for many years at our sessions. He was a founding member of Phil Rooney CCÉ and a lifelong supporter of passing on the gift of music to younger generations.”

The Phil Rooney CCÉ was founded in 1971, thanks to the assistance of McGowan, and serves the area of Ballyshannon, Bundoran, Kinlough, and Tullaghan.
