Donegal County Council allocated €500,000 for Carrigart to Downings Walkway

Donegal County Council has been allocated €500,000 to complete the walkway between Carrigart and Downings under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme (ORIS).

The funding is in respect of measures two and three of the scheme which provides funding of up to €500,000 for strategic repair and maintenance of existing facilities, together with the development of new recreational infrastructure.

Welcoming the announcement made by the Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, Dara Calleary, Donegal Minister of State, Charlie McConalogue said: “This is excellent news for the Carrigart and Downings and will be a huge boost for the area, which is one of the busiest tourist spots in Donegal. This is one of 63 projects that will benefit from the overall investment of €16.5 million.”

Projects such as the Carrigart-Downings walkway directly support the ambition of the National Outdoor Recreation Strategy: ‘Embracing Ireland’s Outdoors’.

The 63 projects announced today are in addition to the 221 projects announced by Minister Calleary in August. The funding allocated under the 2024/2025 programme now stands at over €24.7 million, the largest approval to date under ORIS.

“I thank Minister Calleary and his team for their assistance with this local project, and I look forward to seeing the works being carried out," McConalogue added. "The stretch between Carrigart and Downings is always busy, and this will further enhance the region as a tourist destination, while also making the road much safer.

“This funding announcement is a great opportunity to remind everyone of the wonderful outdoor amenities we have here in Donegal. I would encourage people to get out and experience some of the unique offerings available in our beautiful county."
