A woman who is currently skateboarding the Wild Atlantic Way was a welcome visitor to The Rusty Mackerel in Teelin on Thursday night.
Becky Gilmore, born in Limerick and brought up in Down, is skateboarding the entire 2,500 km (1,553 miles) length of Ireland's Wild Atlantic Way to raise awareness and funds for suicide prevention. Her journey, which began in June 2025, was inspired by the loss of a friend to suicide during the Covid-19 pandemic. You can donate to her fundraiser, which has raised almost €8,000 on Just Giving Becky's fundraiser for Samaritans.
Her attempt to skateboard the entire route has been described as a world first. She is raising money for the Samaritans charity and, as she travels through each county, she paints a mural to "share hope and support for those who are struggling".

Her goal is to spark conversations about mental health and remind people that reaching out for support can save lives. Becky began her journey in County Cork and hopes to finish at the north coast by the end of 2025.

"We were delighted to welcome Becky to The Rusty Mackerel last night - she’s on an incredible journey skating along the Wild Atlantic Way," The Rusty Mackerel in Teelin posted. "Becky’s challenge is about more than adventure, she’s skating to raise awareness for suicide prevention, sharing a powerful message of hope and resilience along every mile ❤️
"It was a pleasure to have her stop by for a well-earned pint by the fire. Safe travels, Becky — we’re all behind you as you continue your journey up the coast!"
