‘A truly remarkable achievement’ as Donegal duo complete 100-mile charity walk

A Donegal couple have completed their 100-mile fundraising walk.

Bernie and his wife, Mary O’Callaghan, have officially trekked from Banba’s Crown, Malin Head, to Killybegs - walking 22km each day. They set off last Friday and arrived on Thursday. Along the way, they celebrated Bernie’s 80th Birthday in the Bay View Hotel.

“We are incredibly proud to share that our Board of Management member, Bernie O’Callaghan, alongside his wife Mary, has completed his incredible walk from Malin Head to Killybegs — a distance of 100 miles — to mark his 80th birthday,” St Catherine's Vocational School shared. “Bernie began this journey all in support of Killybegs Community Hospital and Cancer Research Ireland.

“He completed the walk and returned home to Killybegs. A wonderful milestone of strength, generosity and community spirit.”

The pair undertook the challenge to fundraise for Killybegs Community Hospital and Cancer Research - the GoFundMe is still running.

“So touched tonight when we came into Killybegs,” Mary said. “The school was out with flags and cheering us as we finished, then the band came out. Then our athletes and parents. Both Bernie and myself were teary-eyed. As we’re many parents.

“They played us into town and were wonderful. We went through the finishing tunnel, met by choir members, neighbours, parents of children we had in the past, too many to mention. Huge thank you to Seamus Gillespie, an original Killybegs AC athlete and Geraldine McCarroll, my sister, for driving us through the roads from Dunkineely to Killybegs, to all the people who beeped us in.

“Our last leg from Inver to Killybegs will remain in my memories forever. It will be a memory forever for Seamus for helping erect and dismantle the finishing line and to Inver Hire for generously providing a generator. Thanks to all the coffee pods along the way from Mary and Bernie O’Callaghan.”
