Donegal Garda Chief Superintendent Goretti Sheridan took charge of the major Garda policing operation at the Aviva Stadium on Thursday night for the Republic of Ireland-Portugal World Cup qualifier.
As Strategic Commander, Chief Superintendent Sheridan oversaw the full security and crowd-management plan for the high-stakes international, ensuring the safe running of one of Ireland’s most memorable nights in recent football history.
Chief Superintendent Sheridan, who hails from Rathmullan, was supported by fellow senior Donegal Gardai - Superintendent David Kelly and Inspector Paul McGee - for the game that attracted 50,717 to the Ballsbridge venue.
The Boys in Green delivered a sensational win over Portugal, Troy Parrott scoring twice in a 2-0 win.
“What a game and what a fantastic win for Ireland,” An Garda Síochána Donegal said.
“We are slightly biased but we do feel that the Donegal presence may have contributed in some way towards making the 'Football Special’.”
