A weather alert has been issued for Donegal as Met Éireann warns of very strong and gusty southerly winds set to sweep across the county on Tuesday.
The Yellow Wind Warning, which comes into effect at 3am and remains in place until 9pm, is expected to bring challenging conditions both inland and along the coast.
Forecasters say winds will strengthen significantly through the early hours of the morning, with gales possible near coastal areas. The situation is expected to be of particular concern in parts of Donegal’s shoreline communities due to the coincidence of the strong winds with very high spring tides. This combination heightens the potential for flooding in low-lying coastal areas and increases the risk of wave overtopping in locations exposed to the Atlantic.

Travel conditions are likely to deteriorate throughout the day, with motorists being urged to allow extra time for journeys and to exercise extreme caution on routes affected by debris or sudden gusts. Loose objects may be displaced in the strong winds, and any outdoor events planned for Tuesday could face disruption as organisers assess safety risks.
Local authorities from Donegal County Council and emergency services are monitoring the situation closely, particularly in vulnerable coastal zones where previous storms have caused localised flooding. Residents in at-risk areas are being advised to stay updated with the latest forecasts and to secure outdoor items in advance of the approaching system.
The warning marks another spell of unsettled weather for Donegal as winter conditions continue to intensify, bringing both travel challenges and heightened vigilance across the county.
