Spraoi agus Spórt marks a milestone this week, celebrating one year since taking ownership of the Carndonagh Nursery and Garden Centre.

The site of a much-loved local business, it now plays an expanding role in community life, education, and sustainable living in Inishowen.

“When we received the keys, we knew we had taken on something important,” says Spraoi chief executive, Helen Nolan. “So, on Thursday 11th December, we will be officially celebrating this first anniversary with tea and cake!”

Helen says they also invite everyone to drop in this week to help them celebrate.

“Come say hello, enjoy the festive atmosphere, and browse our beautiful range of gifts. They are perfect for teachers, mums, dads, grandparents, friends, neighbours, and anyone you want to treat this Christmas!”

“This place means a lot to people. Their support over the past year has been incredible.” Customers who supported the previous owners continued to visit, and many new visitors discovered the centre throughout the year, reveals Helen.

She explains how each purchase directly supports Spraoi’s programmes and services across Inishowen.

“The garden centre team played a major role in this first-year success. Staff worked hard to deliver a warm, helpful and creative experience for every visitor. Their energy helped the site grow into a lively community space.”

Spraoi agus Spórt also expanded the centre’s role during 2024. The team introduced events that encouraged community involvement and sustainable living. Families enjoyed new festive experiences. Gardeners learned new skills. Households explored simple ways to reduce food waste. Each event strengthened the centre’s link with the community.

The award-winning social enterprise now plans to develop the site as a training space for people with additional needs.

“We see real potential here,” says Helen. “This centre offers hands-on learning and a safe, supportive environment. It can open new opportunities for people who need them.”

The popular Tír na Nollag inclusive Santa experience opens on 11th December and promises another season of creativity and magic.

Spraoi agus Spórt has also thanked Inishowen Rugby Club for providing car-parking space throughout the year.

“This support helped the centre welcome larger crowds and run major community events.”

“Buying this nursery and garden centre gave us a chance to protect a valued local space,” adds Helen Nolan.

“We are grateful for the trust the community placed in us. We look forward to growing even more in the year ahead.”
