Inclement weather was no match for the Inishowen public who turned out in their droves to meet Aontú leaders following the annual novena in Buncrana on Sunday.

There was a packed church for the penultimate Novena held at Cockhill chapel in Buncrana on Sunday evening the 14 December, where Deputy Peadar Tóibín TD was the guest speaker.

Following the Novena, Deputy Tóibín, Gemma Brolly, Deputy Aontú leader and local Donegal representative, Mary T. Sweeney hosted a meet and greet with a cupan tae in the nearby St. Oran’s School Hall.

“It was an engaging meeting ,very well attended by people from across Donegal,” Ms Sweeney said afterwards “Topics raised included immigration, defective blocks/Housing; issues with Uisce Éireann; Planning costs and Concerns around farming raised by speakers from the floor. Awareness of local issues such as the flooding risk from the Crana river which has still not been totally dredged or addressed by our council since the last flood over 6 years ago… Buncrana remains a flood-risk area due to its location and river systems”

Deputy Leader Gemma Brolly, from Derry, introduced herself explaining she is an Irish primary teacher and as education spokesperson for Aontú expressed her commitment and the party’s supports for the much needed three schools campus to accommodate Gaelcholáiste Chineal Eoghain, Gaelscoil Bhun Crannacha and Crana College.

The latest Red C poll show a significant rise to 10% in support for Aontú in the Ulster-Connacht region.

Deputy Peadar Tóibín said: “This is the highest poll achieved to date for Aontú in the region, an amazing achievement for a party which is not yet 7 years old.

“Support is now declining for the established parties and to achieve real change we need membership plus activism equals an opportunity to bring real change now for Inishowen North and South to get candidates elected in the next local election.”

Following the meeting Mary T Sweeney said she was delighted to see many new people making the decision to join the Aontú party on the night and invited anyone considering Aontú to reach and contact her on social media or via Aontú online.

“This provides a massive opportunity for Aontú to secure a real gain in support before the next election in Donegal, as a real and fearless alternative .”
