Donegal landowners invited to create a ‘Hare’s Corner’ for nature

Inspired by the old farming term for a corner “left to nature,” The Hare’s Corner aims to boost biodiversity, tackle climate change, and enhance wellbeing

Donegal landowners now have a unique opportunity to make space for nature on their land.

From January 1 to January 18, 2026, applications will open for The Hare’s Corner, an innovative biodiversity initiative coordinated by Burrenbeo Trust in partnership with the Donegal County Council.

The project offers practical help to create wildlife ponds, native mini-woodlands, heritage mini-orchards, wildlife hedges, or bespoke ‘plans for nature’. Support includes materials, micro-funding for costs like pond digging, and expert advice, all at no cost to the landowner.

Inspired by the old farming term for a corner “left to nature,” The Hare’s Corner aims to boost biodiversity, tackle climate change, and enhance wellbeing. Landowners, including farmers, schools, and community groups, can apply for one or more actions. In return, participants simply commit to being stewards of their new wildlife haven.

Lee Worrel, Hare’s Corner Coordinator at Burrenbeo Trust, said: “Landowners can apply for one or more biodiversity actions and participation in the Hare’s Corner involves no cost to, and minimal hassle for, the landowner. All we ask in return from beneficiaries is their commitment to act as ‘stewards’ of their own special Hare’s Corner”.

Places are limited, with priority for schools and community groups. Farmers already in ACRES or NPWS Farm Plan Scheme are not eligible.

Tá deis ar leith ag úinéirí talún i gContae Dhún na nGall anois spás a dhéanamh don dúlra ar a gcuid talún.  Ón 1 Eanáir go dtí an 18 Eanáir 2026, fáilteofar roimh iarratais ar Chúinne an Ghiorria, tionscadal nuálach bithéagsúlachta arna chomhordú ag Iontaobhas Burrenbeo i gcomhpháirtíocht le Comhairle Contae Dhún na nGall.

Cuireann an tionscadal cuidiú praiticiúil ar fáil chun locháin fiadhúlra, mionchoillte dúchasacha, mionúlloird oidhreachta, fálta fiadhúlra, nó 'pleananna saincheaptha don dúlra' a chruthú. Cuimsíonn an tacaíocht ábhair, micrea-mhaoiniú do chostais cosúil le tochailt lochán, agus comhairle saineolaithe, go léir gan aon chostas don úinéir talún.

Arna spreagadh ag an tseantéarma feirmeoireachta ar chúinne "fágtha ag an dúlra," tá sé mar aidhm ag Cúinne an Ghiorria bithéagsúlacht a threisiú, dul i ngleic le hathrú aeráide, agus folláine a fheabhsú. Is féidir le húinéirí talún, lena n-áirítear feirmeoirí, scoileanna agus grúpaí pobail, iarratas a dhéanamh ar ghníomh amháin nó níos mó. Níl le déanamh ag rannpháirtithe ach tiomantas a thabhairt go mbeidh siad ina maoirseoirí ar a dtearmann fiadhúlra úr.

Dar le Lee Worrel, Comhordaitheoir Chúinne an Ghiorria ag Iontaobhas Burrenbeo, "Is féidir le húinéirí talún iarratas a dhéanamh ar ghníomhaíocht bhithéagsúlachta amháin nó níos mó agus níl aon chostas ar an úinéir talún le bheith rannpháirteach i gCúinne an Ghiorria. Is é an t-aon rud a iarraimid ar thairbhithe ná a dtiomantas gníomhú mar 'maoir' ar a gCúinne Giorria speisialta féin".

Tá líon na n-áiteanna teoranta, tabharfar tús áite do scoileanna agus do ghrúpaí pobail. Níl feirmeoirí atá i Scéim Phlean Feirme ACRES nó NPWS cheana féin incháilithe.

Tá feidhmiú céimneach an tionscnaimh i gContae Dhún na nGall maoinithe ag 'Ciste Gníomhaíochta na Bithéagsúlachta Áitiúla' de chuid na Seirbhíse Páirceanna Náisiúnta agus Fiadhúlra.

Le tuilleadh eolais a fháil agus le clárú anois chun fógra a fháil nuair a bheidh iarratais ar oscailt, tabhair cuairt ar www.theharescorner.ie.
