Back in the Day sees students and staff from Scoil Mhuire throw a big Christmas party for senior citizens
Laughter, music and memories filled the air at the Inishowen Gateway Hotel earlier this month as Scoil Mhuire students and staff held their much-loved ‘Back in the Day’ Christmas party, a heart-warming celebration dedicated to the senior citizens of the community.
The event, which is now in its tenth year and has become a highlight of the festive calendar, was organised with one aim: to give older members of the community a special day out where they could feel valued, entertained and truly at home. Judging by the smiles, the singing and the conversations that flowed throughout the day, that aim was more than achieved.
Guests travelled from nursing homes across Inishowen to attend, joined by many familiar local faces, creating an atmosphere that was both joyful and deeply communal. For many, it was a chance to meet old friends, reminisce about times gone by and enjoy the company of a younger generation eager to listen and perform.

Entertainment was at the heart of the celebration. Talented Scoil Mhuire students took to the stage, while past pupils and staff also played their part in ensuring the programme was as varied as it was uplifting. A band added to the festive spirit, providing music that had toes tapping and voices joining in, as favourite tunes from “back in the day” echoed around the hall.
More than just a Christmas party, ‘Back in the Day’ is a celebration of connection. It bridges generations, reminding everyone present of the importance of community, kindness and shared experiences. For the senior citizens who attended, it was a day filled with warmth and welcome; for the students, a valuable lesson in connecting with and respecting their elders.

The senior citizens party is a free event put on by Scoil Mhuire, paid for through the school's own fundraising efforts and supported by generous donations from Fr Francis Bradley, Inishowen Credit Union and local county councillors.
