The immense generosity of members of the public and businesses across Donegal shone through once again this year, with Letterkenny Lions Club’s Annual Charity Auction raising €20,000 for the Donegal Food Response Network (DFRN).
The network, established by Donegal Local Development CLG (DLDC), consists of 21 community and voluntary organisations. Each year, 100,672 food packages are delivered to 1,387 families and 549 individuals.
The auction, in partnership with Highland Radio, raised €14,000 – an increase on previous years. The efforts of Letterkenny Lions Club to support DFRN were made possible by the 120 businesses that donated vouchers or made a monetary contribution.
In addition, Letterkenny Lions Club’s ongoing partnership with Dunnes Stores resulted in €6,000 worth of food and cash donations collected during their annual food appeal.
John O’Connell, Chair of Letterkenny Lions Club, says: "The success of the charity auction reflects the people of Donegal’s generosity through donations or taking part in the online auction and Dunnes Stores food appeal. The funds raised will make a huge difference to the Donegal Food Response Network in doing the work they do, especially at Christmas."
Margaret Larkin, DLDC Head of Operations, says: "The €20,000 raised for Donegal Food Response Network will ensure those in need won’t go hungry this Christmas. Thank you to Letterkenny Lions Club for their continued support of DFRN, for which we are ever grateful for and to Highland Radio for giving the cause a platform and, most importantly, to every person who donated in any way they could."
The Social Inclusion and Community Activation Programme (SICAP) is co-funded by the Irish Government, through the Department of Rural and Community Development, and the European Union through the European Social Fund Plus under the Employment, Inclusion, Skills and Training (EIST) Programme 2021-2027.
