Malin surgery to get a check-up of its own with new extension

Brook Medical granted extension

Planning permission has been granted for a significant extension to a medical practice in Malin Town, a move that will enhance healthcare services for the local community.

Dr Síofra Nic an Bhreithiún of Brook Medical had applied for permission to expand the existing surgery located on the grounds of the Kathleen Connolly Village Homes. The approved development will see the erection of a modular building to extend the current medical facility.

The new extension will provide a range of additional clinical and support spaces, including a GP’s consultation room, a nurse’s treatment room, a phlebotomy or blood room, an administrative office, and toilet facilities.

The modular building will be linked to the existing clinic through an already-built utility room, which will be converted into a dedicated waiting area for patients.

As part of the development, permission has also been granted for the provision of an external ramped access, designed to allow ambulance access should the service be required at the surgery in the future.

The application also included approval to connect the new building to existing on-site services, including water, sewage, and electricity.

Donegal County Council granted permission for the development, subject to three conditions. These require that the project be carried out strictly in accordance with the plans and details submitted on November 7, 2025.

Another condition is that surface water from the site must not discharge onto the public road or allow road water to enter the site.

A final condition laid down by the planning authority is that a development contribution fee is to be paid. Under the Donegal County Council Development Contribution Scheme 2016–2021, a total contribution of €329.81 has been set, based on the commercial floor area of the extension. This contribution must be paid before the commencement of the development, unless otherwise agreed in writing with the council.
