Donegal County Council has granted planning permission for an extension to the Church of Ireland in Carndonagh

David Smyth, Select Vestry of Donagh Parish Church, had sought approval on the grounds of the churchyard for the erection of a standalone building to include a toilet and meeting room, along with all associated site works.

The Carndonagh Church of Ireland dates back to the 18th century, with the church notable for its entrance through a reused 15th-century doorway, highlighting its historic significance.

Planning permission was granted subject to five conditions. The stipulations include that before works begin, all external materials and finishes must be agreed in writing with the area’s conservation officer.

Given the historical importance of the site, the planning authority has also requested that a qualified archaeologist be appointed before works commence. An archaeological assessment must be carried out, including at least one trial trench, to examine the presence of any archaeological material and to recommend measures to protect it. The assessment must be submitted to the Department of Housing, Local Government, and Heritage before any development takes place.

Conditions relating to drainage were also included. No surface water from the site is to be discharged onto the public road, and storm water is to be piped to existing on-site services to prevent flooding and protect local waters.
