Standing at 751m Errigal is the highest peak in the Derrveagh Mountains and Donegal's highest peak
Local Councillors have called for toilet facilities to be installed at the Derryveagh Mountains.
The Derryveagh Mountains are the largest mountain range in Donegal and consist of seven peaks. The facilities were called for at Errigal - Donegal’s highest peak at 751m - and Muckish, which councillors highlighted are major tourist attractions.
According to Donegal County Council’s January 2026 Project Update, developments at Errigal and Muckish are underway.
“There is progression on the railway walk, plans for a bridge and an upgraded walk at Muckish, but is there any progress on the toilets?” Councillor John Sheamais Ó Fearraigh asked at the Glenties Municipal District Meeting. “Loads of tourists visit, up to 1,000, so having permanent toilet facilities is important.”
Cllr Denis McGee echoed the calls for the facilities, highlighting that “Errigal is the largest attraction and it is important to entice people to visit the Gaeltacht. There are no toilet facilities or adequate parking, which deters people from visiting. This is something that needs to be made a priority.”

According to the update, the fencing contract is now complete on the 3.4km gravel path from Errigal carpark to the summit. The construction of a car park and path at Muckish Railway Walk will commence in the first quarter of the year and a Bridge Consultant has been appointed. As for the toilet facilities, it will be passed on to the management and technical team.
