Buncrana's narrow Mill Bridge needs a footbridge to allow the return of two-way traffic.
A County Councillor is calling for the urgent installation of a new footbridge in Buncrana to ease traffic congestion at the narrow Mill Bridge in the town.
Cllr Jack Murray says a new footbridge – which would be attached to the existing structure – is the only realistic long-term solution for both pedestrians and motorists along the busy route.
The Sinn Fein public representative says he has once again pressed Donegal County Council for a dedicated footbridge at the Mill Bridge, which is currently governed by a one-way system, leading to constant traffic jams.
Cllr Murray explains: “While the temporary water barriers and one-way system currently in place have undoubtedly improved pedestrian safety, they have also caused significant frustration and concern for motorists. This issue is raised with me very regularly by residents and road users in the town.”
“Mill Bridge is a complex location, with multiple approach roads and junctions. Despite signage being in place, there is ongoing confusion around right of way, which is far from ideal for such a busy area.”

He said: “For these reasons, I firmly believe that the only real and lasting solution is the construction of a footbridge on the town side of the bridge. This would safely remove pedestrians from the existing structure entirely, allow the footpath to be taken off the bridge, and enable the safe reinstatement of two-way traffic.”
Cllr Murray says he has asked the DCC roads staff to advance a design and seek funding, and he was pleased to receive the support of fellow local councillors on the issue.
He added: “I am hopeful this can be progressed, but I will continue to push for it until it is delivered. This is a concern people raise time and time again — and they deserve to be heard.”
