Criticism of removal of Minor Tourism funding - ‘a huge blow’

Donegal Municipal District meeting took place in Donegal Town

Members of Donegal County Council have lamented the removal of the Minor Tourism works grant scheme in the county, calling its removal “disappointing” and a “huge blow.”

Speaking at January’s Donegal Municipal District Meeting, Cllr Noel Jordan was supported by Cllr Jimmy Brogan in their frustration at the scheme’s removal.

The Minor Tourism Related Works Grant funded works that would enhance the tourism product offered in various locations in the county, including signage, improved access to popular sites, scenic spots, picnic areas, and beaches.

Cllr Jordan asked the Council Executive: “I just want to air my grievances over the withdrawal of the Minor Tourism funding. A lot of these are tourism projects and help a lot of small towns and villages.

“It is a huge blow because there were a number of groups looking forward to applying and getting that funding for some really good projects, and it is very disappointing.

“Is that fund coming back, or has it totally been removed?”

Cllr Jimmy Brogan said he was “disappointed” that the project had been shelved.

Tourism Manager at Donegal County Council, Joy Browne, responded that she would look into the issue.

She further commented: “There will be other resources of funding. If you have any groups that are looking to do a project, do send them on to us.”
