Elderly man sustains 'serious injuries' in Letterkenny town collision

An elderly pensioner is being treated in hospital for serious injuries following a road traffic collision in Letterkenny at lunchtime today.

The man, who is in his 80s, was struck by a car in the incident which occurred at around 1pm.

Gardaí and emergency services rushed to the scene at Lower Main Street and the man was taken to Letterkenny University Hospital for treatment of what have been described as “serious injuries”.

No other injuries were reported at the time.

The scene is preserved for technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators. 

The road remains closed with local diversions in place.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to contact them.

A spokesperson said: “Any road users, who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area between 12:15pm and 1:15pm on Thursday 15th January 2026 are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact Letterkenny Garda Station on (074) 916 7100, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.”

Gardai say that investigations are “ongoing”.
