Donegal motorist handed down conviction for speeding in 50km/h zone

The motorist was travelling at 81km/h in a 50/km/h zone

A man has been convicted and fined for speeding despite not attending the scheduled court hearing.

Donal Byrne of Hillhead, Ardara was due to appear before the February sitting of An Clochan Liath / Dungloe District Court. He is charged that on July 22, 2025 on the R259 at An Mhin Mor, Dungloe, he exceeded the 50km/h speed limit. The offence is contrary to Section 47 of the Road Traffic Act 1961. 

A Go Safe speed van operator gave evidence that the car was travelling at 81km/h when detected. A Fixed Charge Notice (FCN) was issued but not paid. 

Judge Emile Daly said the defendant was on notice of the court date. She imposed a fine of €420 to be paid within four months.
