The Irish Naval Service’s offshore patrol vessel L.E. Samuel Beckett visited Buncrana and Lough Swilly on Tuesday morning, March 3, making a scheduled call to the scenic inlet.
The 90-metre-long patrol ship, named after the celebrated Irish playwright who died in 1989, has been a key asset in the Naval Service fleet for the past decade and more.
First launched in 2014, the L.E. Samuel Beckett is typically tasked with fisheries protection, search and rescue, and maritime security operations.

While official Defence Forces comments on the specific purpose of the Navy boat’s visit to Inishowen were not immediately available, such port calls are understood to be relatively routine.
The presence of the patrol ship in the bright spring sunshine of Lough Swilly on Tuesday morning, provided a boost to local observers and enthusiasts, with onlookers and photographers capturing views of the stunning €71 million vessel.
