Letterkenny University Hospital is set to commence recruitment for a consultant dermatologist.
The decision has been described as a “significant and hard-won step forward” for patients across Donegal.
The development follows sustained engagement and advocacy by Cllr Declan Meehan, who has worked tirelessly behind the scenes to address concerns around dermatology services in the region.
Professor Anne Marie Tobin had initially refused to sanction the post, despite growing waiting lists and the need for Donegal patients to travel to Sligo.

She is said to have made the decision stating that a standalone dermatology consultant in LUH would be inappropriate, despite the fact that the service in Sligo is staffed by one consultant.
When Clr Meehan raised this issue at the Regional Health Forum last May there were over 1,800 patients in Donegal on the dermatology waiting list for more than six months.
"This is a very positive development for patients and families across Donegal,” Cllr Meehan said. “Access to dermatology services is essential, and I have been working persistently to ensure that our region is not left behind. I am pleased that recruitment for a consultant dermatologist will now commence immediately."
Cllr Meehan also acknowledged the role of key stakeholders in achieving this outcome.
He added: "I want to sincerely thank the HSE and the Minister for Health for listening to the concerns that were raised. Constructive engagement has been crucial in reaching this point, and I welcome the commitment shown to strengthening services in our region."
"While this is a very welcome announcement, I will continue to work closely with all parties to ensure that services are not only restored but strengthened into the future. Patients deserve certainty, and today’s decision is a strong step in the right direction."
Cllr Meehan reaffirmed his commitment to advocating for improved healthcare provision and equitable access to specialist services for communities across the region.
“Following a recent decision to block the appointment of a Consultant Dermatologist at Letterkenny University Hospital, I have worked, along with Cllr Jimmy Kavanagh, to have that decision overturned - and I’m very pleased to confirm that progress has now been made,” Senator Manus Boyle added.
“Following a recent meeting with Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill, approval has been given and the recruitment process will begin imminently. “This is a significant step forward for patients and staff in the region, improving access to essential dermatology services locally.”
