Letterkenny University Hospital (LUH) has become a DAFNE Centre, expanding access to a proven diabetes self-management programme for adults with type 1 diabetes across Donegal.
DAFNE, which stands for Dose Adjustment For Normal Eating, is an internationally recognised education programme designed to help adults with type 1 diabetes live as normal as possible while maintaining blood glucose levels within healthy target ranges.
The programme focuses on reducing the risk of long-term diabetes complications by teaching participants how to adjust their insulin doses to match their food intake and daily activities.

LUH currently delivers courses remotely. These involve structured online learning completed at home, alongside weekly group video calls facilitated by a trained DAFNE educator. Plans are in place to introduce face-to-face courses at LUH in the near future.
This educational programme is suitable for adults with type 1 diabetes or Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults (LADA) who attend LUH for their diabetes care and who use insulin injections.
Speaking about their experience of the programme, Terri Boyle a local participant said, “The DAFNE course was great. I learnt so much and it was also a refresher of the basics. After 40 years of living with diabetes, and over the last few years feeling like it was controlling my life, I am back in control and it’s all thanks to the course. Thank you Orlaith and Christine for your support throughout the course.”
Nicki Perry, a Diabetes Senior Dietitian and DAFNE educator highlighted the impact of the programme, “It is inspiring to hear how this educational tool has helped people feel more confident in managing their diabetes while also improving their quality of life. Thousands of people with type 1 diabetes have already benefited from this course in the UK, Australia, Qatar, Kuwait and the Republic of Ireland. We are delighted to now bring this course to people with type 1 diabetes in Donegal.”
