Directions awaited as file received by DPP on Ardara murder case

The Director of Public Prosecutions has received a Garda file on the alleged murder of Donegal businessman Stephen McCahill in Co Donegal.

The man charged with his murder, Michael Maloney, has reappeared at Letterkenny District Court, via video link, from Castlerea Prison.

Garda Sergeant Maurice Doyle told the court that a file on the matter has been received by the DPP and directions in the case are still outstanding.

He requested the case to be adjourned until April 27, 2026 which was agree to by Maloney's solicitor  Mark Mullaney.

Maloney, 32, appeared at Letterkenny District Court by videolink from Castlerea Prison.

He is charged with the murder of Ardara businessman Stephen McCahill at his home at Beagh, Ardara in the early hours of Monday, January 5, 2026.

Maloney, a relation of Mr McCahill by marriage from Loughros Point in Ardara, only spoke to agree to a four-week adjournment in the case.

He is charged that on January 5, at Beagh, Ardara, he did murder Stephen McCahill.

The charge is Contrary to Common Law and as provided for by Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1964.

Mr McCahill, a 66-year-old father-of-two, was killed at his home at Beagh, Ardara in the early hours of Monday, January 5th.

Maloney was arrested a short time later and charged with his murder at a special sitting of Letterkenny District Court.
