The man appeared at Letterkenny District Court
A man has appeared at Letterkenny District Court charged with failing to register with gardai after being found guilty of a sex offence in a different jurisdiction.
The man, who is aged in his 40s, did not speak during the brief hearing and cannot be named for legal reasons.
By law, the man is obliged by law to inform Gardai of his name and address within three days of entering the state.
The nature of the man's previous sexual offence was not disclosed in court.
He was charged that on March 27, 2026, within the jurisdiction of the State, being a person to whom Part 2 of the Sex Offenders Act 2001 applied, did fail without reasonable excuse to notify within the required three day time frame, which begins on the relevant date, the Garda Siochana of his name used by him at the time or previously his home address on the relevant date on which notice was required by the provisions of section 10 (1) and section 6 of the Sex Offenders Act, 2001.
The charge was contrary to section 12 (1) (a) (as amended by Section 10 of the Sex Offenders (Amendment) Act 2023 and Section 12 (3)(as amended by section 13 of the Criminal Law (Human Trafficking) Act 2008) of the Sex Offenders Act 2001.
The accused was represented by solicitor Rory O'Brien.
The case was adjourned until April 27, 2026 by Judge Ciaran Liddy.
