Hard graft in store to make one of Donegal's best beaches accessible again

Access to one of Donegal’s picturesque beaches is currently impossible - but there's a plan in place.

Fanad Coastal Group is asking for your help and says that they “need your muscles” on Saturday, April 4, to build a new path at Ballymastocker, Portsalon.

Volunteers are asked to meet at the Warden car park at 4pm, to come prepared, as work will get underway on a new pathway.

“You may have read that access to the beach via the boardwalk is currently impossible, “ the group posted.

“As a result, people are making their various ways across the dunes.  With the Council, landowners, and other agencies' agreement, we have offered to install posts and rope, supplied by the Council, to create a path as the visitor pressure builds

“Protecting the dunes from trampling is crucial, but it’s a big job; that’s why we need you and yours.  If you have any tools (sledgehammers, pole driver or spade, and heavy-duty gloves), please bring them along.  Many hands make light work!

The good news is that Donegal County Council will be starting works on the beach in the coming weeks, focusing on re-routing the river and reducing dune erosion.

“Ballymastocker is a magnificent beach and hugely important to those who live, work, and visit here. Let’s show just how much we care by helping out on Saturday.”
