Concerns that Dublin fuel protest may impact Donegal patients going to hospital

There's expected to be widespread traffic disruption in the capital today amid protests over rising fuel costs.

Concerns have been raised about potential disruption in Dublin today as a protest over rising fuel prices takes place, with particular worry for Donegal families travelling to the capital for essential hospital appointments.

Buncrana County Councillor Jack Murray has shared an appeal from a local parent whose child is due to attend the National Rehabilitation Hospital for a scheduled weekly stay. While acknowledging that many people understand and support the reasons behind the protest, the message stresses the importance of maintaining access for those in urgent need of care.

The parent highlighted how children attending the hospital often live with serious conditions, including brain injuries, spinal injuries and limb loss. Their appointments are not easily rescheduled, with some families waiting weeks or even months for treatment slots. In addition, their care involves carefully coordinated schedules with specialist staff assigned throughout the day.

Fears have been expressed that significant traffic disruption could prevent families from reaching these critical appointments, potentially delaying vital treatment. There are also concerns about the impact on emergency services attempting to move through affected routes.

Councillor Murray’s message urges those taking part in the protest to remain mindful of these circumstances. He emphasised that while protest plays an important role in highlighting issues such as rising fuel costs, it is equally important to ensure that a clear lane is maintained at all times.

The appeal calls for cooperation and awareness to help ensure that children, parents and emergency vehicles can travel safely despite the expected widespread disruption.
