Easter Bank Holiday Weekend 2026 Road Safety Campaign ran between Thursday April 2 and this morning, Tuesday, April 7

“A number” of motorists were clocked for breaking the speed limit in Letterkenny during An Garda Síochána’s Easter Bank Holiday Weekend 2026 Road Safety Campaign - including one at  132km/h.

Garda Grainne Doherty from Letterkenny Garda Station explained: “Some of the speeds detected were 106 km/h in a 60km/hr zone and 132km/h in a 100km/hr zone, both being in Letterkenny.”

Eleven drivers were arrested in Donegal on suspicion of alcohol/drug driving-related offences, seven of which were for alcohol and four were drug-related.

“Several vehicles were confiscated over the weekend for reasons such as no insurance, no test, or no tax,” Garda Doherty added. “Vehicles were also taken from many unaccompanied learner drivers."

Garda Doherty also wishes to remind drivers that it is never safe or acceptable to get behind the wheel of a vehicle after having alcohol or drugs.

“Motorists are reminded to always drive within the speed limit. Always wear a seatbelt and never use a mobile phone when driving,” she added. “Keep distractions out of the vehicle and ensure that your full attention is on the road.

Gardaí made the reminder that it is against the law for learner drivers to be behind the wheel without being accompanied by a fully-licensed driver.
