Jim Lynch Mural and Lawrence Collection Mural light-up planned for Letterkenny

A mural of legendary Letterkenny figure Jim Lynch will be officially unveiled next week on the town's most historic street, nearly four years after he passed away.

The mural depicts the town's former mayor watering flowers in Church Lane, giving him a permanent presence in the street he worked tirelessly to restore.

It’s also a tribute to the vision Jim outlined for the regeneration of Church Lane and the Cathedral Quarter to become the cultural and tourism heartbeat of Letterkenny, which is now coming to fruition.

A plaque dedicated to Jim will be unveiled by a member of the Lynch family outside No.3 Church Lane.

Also part of the event, another new landmark on Church Lane will be illuminated with the lighting up of the Lawrence Collection Mural. The iconic photograph of Church Lane, taken over a century ago, was recreated by renowned artist Ciaran Dunlevy on a gable wall and will now be lit up at night.

The lights were installed by Paddy Bond Electrical Contractors and have been sponsored by the chair of the Cathedral Quarter Committee, Sean Purser.

Sean says it promises to be a special occasion, “This will be a poignant evening of memory and illumination. Jim had a lifelong commitment to the heritage of Letterkenny. This mural keeps him right at the heart of the very place he was so dedicated to. He would have been delighted to see the Lawrence Collection Mural lit up as well. It encapsulates much of what Jim stood for, highlighting the past to build a brighter future.”

All works were funded by Donegal County Council’s Minor Tourism Enhancement Grant. The event gets underway at 8pm on Thursday, April 23, and refreshments will be provided at the Himalayan Cafe. There will also be speeches from a member of the Lynch family, artist Ciaran Dunlevy and from Sean Purser Chair of the Cathedral Quarter Committee.
