The sporting heritage of Inishowen is to be celebrated at a special two-day event in Carndonagh later this month.
The Colgan Heritage Committee is proud to present a special two-day heritage event titled The Sporting Heritage of Carndonagh and Inishowen, taking place on Saturday and Sunday, April 25 and 26, at the Colgan Hall, Carndonagh. The event will run from 12.00 noon to 4.30 pm on both days.
The event will offer visitors a rich and engaging look into the sporting past of the Inishowen peninsula. Attendees can explore a wide range of historical displays, including old photographs, archived news items, sporting memorabilia, and other fascinating artefacts that capture the spirit and evolution of sport in the region.
A special feature of the weekend will be a panel discussion at 3.00 pm on Saturday, April 25, featuring representatives from local sports clubs, along with sportspeople and personalities.
This discussion will provide valuable insights into the role sport has played—and continues to play—in shaping community life across Inishowen. Many of the clubs and associations across the peninsula are celebrating significant milestones in 2026, such as the boxing club and soccer club in Carndonagh who are celebrating 50th anniversaries, as is the Rashenny club in Clonmany.
For over a century, sport has been at the heart of life in Inishowen, serving as a powerful force for community identity, social cohesion, and cultural continuity. From the early 1900s, when Gaelic games flourished as expressions of national identity during the Irish cultural revival, to the growth of soccer, athletics, boxing, golf, and other sports, the region’s sporting story reflects both local traditions and wider societal change.
Throughout the decades, local sports clubs have acted as vital community hubs—places not only for competition, but also for connection, support, and shared experience. Even during periods of economic hardship and emigration, sport has provided a sense of stability, pride, and belonging.

In more recent years, sport in Inishowen has become increasingly diverse and inclusive, with expanded opportunities for women and young people, improved facilities, and growing links to regional and national sporting networks. At the same time, it continues to preserve and celebrate the unique cultural heritage of the area.
“The Sporting Heritage of Carndonagh & Inishowen” aims to honour this rich legacy while encouraging reflection on the important role sport continues to play in community life today.
The Colgan Heritage Committee warmly invites members of the public, local families, sports enthusiasts, and visitors to attend this engaging and nostalgic event.
Admission is free, and all are welcome.
