Glenmaquin Stop Sign - Photo: Cllr Donal Coyle
Donegal County Council is being urged to lower the newly installed sign at Glenmaquin crossroads, between Listillion and Convoy/Raphoe.
It's claimed that the stop symbol itself is too high on the post, and some motorists have reported being unable to see it when there is a strong sun glare.
Cllr Donal Coyle told a meeting of the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District that the problem was reported following a serious accident.
“If you are coming over the top of the hill, if the sun is rising in the sky, you have to use a visor to shield the sun from your eyes,” he said.
“Just a fortnight ago, there was a pretty serious accident.
"It was a stranger to the locality who didn’t see the stop sign because of the sun. They went through the crossroads and hit a car.
“The guards were on the scene and have a record of that accident.”

Cllr Coyle said he wanted to see the problem dealt with as quickly as possible.
He said that the route is now much busier than before, particularly with traffic coming from Convoy, and is widely used by motorists travelling from Letterkenny.
In response, the council said the issue will now be assessed by the roads engineer and, if necessary, changes will be made.
The executive added that an advance stop sign will also be considered.
