Success for Donegal's Eric Roberts and Obituary at Royal Television Society Awards

Donegal had plenty of reason to celebrate at the 2026 Royal Television Society Ireland Awards / Gradaim RTS.

Eric Roberts won the Breakthrough Talent Award, while Obituary Season 2, which is primarily shot in Ballyshannon and Bundoran, won the category for Entertainment / Siamsaíocht.

The Breakthrough Talent Award was decided by the RTS ROI Committee and recognises new and emerging professional excellence in the role of Presenter, Journalist, Show Host, Interviewer, Commentator or Cast Member.

Eric, beforehand, presented the award for Factual Series to the winner, The Traitors Ireland

Also, Obituary Season 2, werfe victorious in the category for Entertainment / Siamsaíocht. It beat off competition from  Mix Tape, Video Nasty, The Walsh Sisters and The Young Offenders Series 4.

Obituary follows Elvira Clancy (played by Siobhán Cullen), an underpaid obituarist for a small-town newspaper who begins murdering people she dislikes to ensure she has steady work. Season 2 was filmed in late 2024 and began airing on RTÉ One in October 2025.

The Gradaim RTS / RTS Ireland Awards are sponsored by Screen Producers Ireland, Coimisiún na Meán, Screen Ireland, Screen Producers Ireland, Screen Ireland, IMRO, Screen Scene, Piranha Bar, Egg Post Productions, TVM, CameraKit.ie, Production People, NEP and Nemeton TV.

Awards were announced across the 12 categories decided by the RTS judging panel, as well as two special awards – the Breakthrough Talent Award and Outstanding Contribution Award. In addition, the RTS Audience Choice Award, which was voted for by the public and gave Irish audiences the opportunity to recognise their favourite  television show that has been broadcast in 2025 on one of the partner broadcasters - Virgin Media Television, RTÉ, TG4 or Sky.

Music performances at the awards were from Jerry Fish and the Discovery Gospel Choir, with Gavin Murphy on keys and guitar.
