After decades of dedicated public service, Buncrana’s John O’Keefe has officially retired, closing the chapter on a long and varied career that spanned both An Garda Síochána and the Department of Social Protection.

Originally from Dublin, John spent many years stationed in Buncrana as a Garda Sergeant, where he became a familiar and respected figure in the community.

It was during his time in Donegal that he met his wife, Marie, a native of Ballintra. The couple, who live at Umricam, went on to build their life together in the area and are proud parents to two children, Lizanne and Declan.

Almost twenty years ago, John retired from the guards, but his commitment to public service did not end there. He soon began a new role with the Department of Social Protection next door to the Garda Station, working diligently up until last Friday, April 10, when he took his second and final retirement.

A party was held at the Cottage Bar that night to officially mark the occasion, when family and friends gathered to wish John well (see photo below courtesy of Brendan Flanagan).

Known for his friendly and outgoing nature, John has long been regarded as a community-minded individual. He was a founding member of the Cockhill Bridge Action Group and played a key role in a successful campaign that ultimately led to the development of the new bridge at Cockhill.

Throughout his two decades with the Department of Social Protection, John earned immense respect from colleagues and the public alike, with many appreciating his professionalism and sense of kindness.

As he steps into retirement, he leaves behind a workplace where he will be greatly missed.

Enjoy your well-earned rest, John!
