The Donegal branch of the Irish Hotels Federation (IHF) has announced the election of Carolynne Murray, Director and General Manager of the Shandon Hotel & Spa at Marble Hill, as its new Chair.
Ms Murray succeeds Aisling Arnold of Arnold’s Hotel in Dunfanaghy, whose exemplary leadership and commitment have been widely recognised and celebrated within the industry.
Speaking at the branch’s Annual Gala Dinner in the Mount Errigal Hotel Letterkenny – an event attended by over 200 guests – Ms Murray highlighted Donegal’s reputation as a trendsetter in Irish hospitality. She emphasised the collaborative spirit and dedication of the region’s hoteliers, stating: “Donegal does not simply follow trends – it sets them. This evening, we recognise the people who make that possible.”
Ms Murray praised the outgoing leadership of Aisling and Donegal Branch representative Niall Coffey of Harvey’s Point: “Aisling has been truly exceptional. She has set a standard that challenges all of us to rise to the occasion, and I sincerely thank her for the strong foundation she has established. Niall’s commitment has been steadfast, and his good humour has always ensured everything stayed on course. It has been a genuine pleasure working with both of them.”
Murray noted that with Ms Arnold and Mr Coffey continuing as IHF representatives, Donegal’s voice will remain strong and influential at national level. She also acknowledged the support of Conor McEniff and Donna McGee, whose professionalism, dedication and fresh perspective contribute greatly to the work of the branch.
Outlining her vision as the new chair, Ms Murray said: “We find ourselves at a pivotal moment – not only as a branch, but as an industry. The decisions we make, the partnerships we foster and the voice we represent will shape the future of tourism and hospitality in Donegal. My commitment is clear: to build on our existing momentum and to advance it with purpose. Because in an industry defined by change, standing still is simply not an option.”
Central to her message is the importance of unity and partnership: “Our greatest strength lies in our unity. When we work together, we do more than participate – we influence, we lead, and we deliver meaningful impact. Partnership will remain central to our success. The roles of Fáilte Ireland and Donegal Tourism are vital, and I am committed to strengthening those relationships, ensuring that opportunities, supports, and funding are fully realised, particularly during quieter periods.”
Ms Murray also reaffirmed her commitment to engagement and sustainability: “Every hotelier in Donegal should feel connected, supported and effectively represented. We will continue to develop initiatives, pursue opportunities and embrace innovation across our sector. And sustainability will remain not just a focus, but a responsibility we all share.”
Addressing guests Ms Murray told the event: “Let us take this opportunity to reconnect, to reflect, and to celebrate what defines our industry — its people. If there is one thing we do exceptionally well, it is hospitality. Thank you for your trust and your continued support. I look forward to the journey ahead – one defined by collaboration, progress and shared success.”
The event celebrated the achievements of the branch, with Ms Murray inviting Niall Coffey to present Aisling Arnold with a token of appreciation for her outstanding leadership over the past two years. She extended sincere thanks to Conor McEniff for organising the evening at the Mount Errigal Hotel and bringing the community together in a wonderful setting.
Speaking at the gala dinner, Ms Arnold said: “As I step down as Chairperson of the Irish Hotels Federation Donegal Branch, I do so with immense pride in what we have accomplished. Representing the branch has been both an honour and a privilege. I’ve had the opportunity to work alongside dedicated professionals who care deeply about our industry, our county and the people we welcome through our doors every day to whom I'm extremely grateful.
“I’d like to wish our incoming Chair Carolynne Murray every success. At a time when the hospitality industry is evolving, her leadership promises fresh perspective, energy and strategic direction. She will ensure that Donegal remains a leading destination, known for its warmth, authenticity and excellence. Carolynne's dedication, professionalism and deep-rooted passion for hospitality make her the perfect person to lead the branch forward. I look forward to commencing my new role as branch representative, working alongside and supporting Carolynne and Niall Coffey.”
Congratulating Ms Murray on her election, IHF President Matt O’Connor said: “Carolynne’s commitment to our sector and extensive experience are a tremendous asset as we advocate for members and our wider tourism industry at the highest levels of Government.
“As Ireland’s largest indigenous employer, tourism is a vital driver of economic activity and plays a vital role supporting over 270,000 livelihoods including some 8,000 jobs throughout Donegal. It is therefore critical that we secure the right conditions to ensure a sustained, long-term recovery. I look forward to working with Carolynne during her term to deliver our key priorities for economic growth, sustainability and the development of the next generation of hospitality talent.”
