Pobalscoil Ghaoth Dobhair were the runners up in The Uí Chadhain Gael Linn All-Ireland debating final which was held in the Hodson Bay Hotel, Athlone on Monday, January 31.
Pobalscoil Ghaoth Dobhair were joined in the senior final by teams representing Coláiste Eoin, Booterstown, Dublin, Scoil Chuimsitheach Chiaráin, An Cheathrú Rua, County Galway and Coláiste Pobail Ráth Chairn, County Meath.
‘Tá éacht déanta ag teilifís RTÉ le 60 bliain anuas’ was the motion discussed. The high standard of debating at the event posed a considerable challenge to the adjudicators. After much deliberation they announced that Scoil Chuimsitheach Chiaráin, An Cheathrú Rua, County Galway were victorious in the senior final.
The winning teams in each section were each presented with a perpetual trophy and a voucher worth €1,000, while vouchers worth €250 were awarded to each of the runners up.
Nuacht TG4/RTÉ presenter Eimear Ní Chonaola was the guest speaker on the night. A former participant herself in years gone by, she said that the experience had stood to her along the way in her career in media.
Congratulating all of the participants on their great achievement, Tomás Rua Ó Cadhla from Gael Linn said it was hugely encouraging to see these young debaters achieve such high standards. He thanked the teachers involved with the teams who reached the finals and indeed the teachers from other schools around the country who took part in the competition.
