Fanad Lighthouse
Probably the most photographed place in Donegal! The lighthouse was built in 1817 after the HMS Saldanha was shipwrecked off the coast in 1811 while chasing a French privateer. Of the 253 on board the only survivor was the ships parrot. Another famous local shipwreck is of the SS Laurentic which was sunk in 1917 at the entrance to Lough Swilly after hitting two mines and with a loss of over 300 lives. The Laurentic also had a secret cargo of 3,211 gold bars worth over £5m, or €410m by todays standards, and 22 of those gold bars are said to be still down there ...
