Donegal Town remains on high alert as it suffers the effects of the third storm to hit the north west in four days.

Close to 800 homes were without power earlier on Sunday evening. While some have had power restored, ESB crews are battling difficult conditions to restore service to the remaining 125 premises. It is estimated that the fault will be repaired by 1.45am.

The town's Main Street has reopened following an incident earlier where the fire service and gardaí attended an incident in a business premises. The incident - believed to involve a fire - was quickly brought under control.

Lough Eske and the River Eske have burst their banks in a number of places, leading to extensive flooding on the lake shore and at several points along the River. Sandbags have been placed at the doors of homes and businesses in the areas of town most at risk.

In Drumlonagher where flooding is a major concern for homeowners, water reached the road but has since subsided. The high tide time has passed but the combination of melting snow, heavy rain and the storm surge means that the Eske water levels remain worringly high.

High winds have led to fallen trees and branches, and much debris on the roads. Motorists are advised to avoid unnecessary journeys and if they need to drive, to do so with extreme caution.

A status orange weather warning remains in place for the county until 7am with gale force west to northwest winds with severe and damaging gusts. These winds combined with very high seas will lead to wave overtopping, which may result in coastal flooding.
