AVS students' positive initiative will help to 'Make Kindness The Norm'

Students adding their Random Act of Kindness heart to the Kindness Window

The Student Council of the Abbey Vocational School organised a very successful Random Act of Kindness week.

The idea was to Make Kindness the norm, looking for opportunities to share kindness, care and compassion.

Acts could be informal and simple, sharing a smile even with a mask, opening a door for someone, greeting a person in public or sharing an act of kindness in your own home.

Acts can benefit one person, a larger group like your fellow students, colleagues and friends, neighbours, or the whole community.

Events for Random Act of Kindness week:

Monday - Valentine’s Day: Students were invited to download their free 'Random Act of Kindness' Spotify Playlist - Fantastic songs! Look up ‘Keep Kindness growing’ on Spotify.

Valentine’s chocolates prepared by TY students were on sale for only 50c for your special person…or as a ‘Random Act of Kindness’ gift for a classmate/stranger. All of the chocolates sold out in record time. Funds raised will go to a Kindness charity.

Tuesday: Kindness Window in the assembly area - What kindness has been shown to you or have you shown? Use a Kindness Heart to celebrate a Random Act of Kindness

Students were encouraged to send a text to someone with a compliment/smile or to write a letter to someone and post it.

Wednesday: Random Act of Kindness Bingo cards - one for every First and Second Year student. Each time students had a good deed listed on their card completed this week, they marked it off. Completed cards were left in the Student Voice box in the assembly area and two students will win a prize of cinema vouchers.

Thursday: Random Act of Kindness messages from the Student Council were placed on lockers. Thursday’s activities were postponed until after midterm due to exams.

Storm Eunice unfortunately cut the week short by a day.

A spokesperson for the AVS said: "We look forward to our Friday’s Gratitude Day after the midterm break."
