Great news for islanders as €2m funding for roads announced

Over €2m has been announced for the upgrade of island roads in Donegal. The islands that will benefit from the vital funding will be Aranmore, Tory, Inishbofinn and Gola. 

Last year the Councillors of the Glenties Municipal District in conjunction with Coiste na noileáin, succeeded in developing a new policy, which would allow Donegal County Council to maintain island roads after they had been repaired.  Once the commitment had been given by the council, the department were in a position to provide this funding.

For many years these island roads were left to deteriorate as they did not fall under the remit of the council or there was not sufficient money in the council budget to provide maintenance or do repairs.  

Fianna Fáil Councillor Noreen Mc Garvey is delighted to welcome the recent announcement from the Minister for Rural & Community Development  Heather Humpreys TD.

She said: "I know that the people of the islands will be pleased that these roads can now be repaired and maintained going forward.  I understand that this is an initial round of funding and that further investment is being considered.I wish to thank the Minister, the representatives from the department who attended our meetings and Minister Charlie Mc Conologue who also worked on our behalf,
