Registrations open for Donegal Sports Partnership's coaching programmes for children

Donegal Sports Partnership’s 2022 Coach and Volunteer Education Programme courses start shortly

Registrations are now being taken for Donegal Sports Partnership’s 2022 Coach and Volunteer Education Programme courses which are set to be held over the coming weeks.

Coaching Children in Sport is a four-module blended programme that begins on Thursday next, March 24, while the Coaching Girls in Sport workshop is a three-hour online session that takes place on Tuesday, April 4, between 7pm and 10pm.

Both programmes are funded by Dormant Accounts and Sport Ireland and will provide opportunities for coaches and volunteers to progress their coach education.

The Coaching Children in Sport's first module Coaching Children Successfully in Sport – An Introduction for Coaches" will be delivered via Zoom between 7pm and 9pm.
The second workshop Child-Centred Coaching – Understanding Child Development and Learning and its Impact on How We Coach will also be delivered via Zoon on Tuesday, March 29, and Thursday, March 31 between 7pm and 9pm.

Workshops three and four will both be delivered in-person at the Aura Leisure Centre on Saturday, April 2, between 10am and 4pm.

Workshop three Developing Physical Literacy through Sport 1 – Coaching Children to Move will be followed by workshop four Developing Physical Literacy through Sport 2 – Coaching Children to Think.

Sport Ireland Coaching has developed the modules to provide candidates with a basic understanding of children’s sports and physical activity, and the best ways to optimise children’s enjoyment, participation, and positive outcomes.

The concepts of physical literacy and holistic development run throughout the series of workshops and will be covered in detail.

Participants must attend all four workshops and be over 18 years of age to receive a certificate from Sport Ireland.

Girls in Sport Workshop

Meanwhile, Sport Ireland's Coaching Girls in Sport workshop, which takes place on Tuesday, April 4, between 7pm and 10pm, has been designed to support coaches of girls aged 12 to 17.

The workshop has been developed to enable coaches to create a positive experience of sport and physical activity for girls in their formative years and provide an environment where girls and young women can develop holistically.

On completion of the workshop, and the pre and post-workshop activities, coaches will be able to identify the key reasons why girls engage in physical activity and sport and why they drop out; gain an understanding of the relationship between physical activity participation and mental health for adolescent girls; understand the importance of communication (coach to player and player to player) in retaining girls in sport; raise awareness around the effects maturation and puberty can have on females; identify the role of actual competence, perceived competence and confidence for engaging girls in sport and physical activity; examine coaching practices and communication that foster autonomy, confidence, and belonging in girls across the team and individual sports; design environments that cater for relationships, connectedness and competition.

The event is €10 per person. To register, click on the link:
