The north west Regional President of St Vincent de Paul says families are under pressure due to the rising cost of living and are being forced to make tough decisions between putting fuel in their car or food on the table. Families and individuals are under stress as a result of the situation, she said.
Mrs Rosa Glacken says there is concern that families may not be getting the nourishment they require as a result of cutting back on their grocery shopping and trying to make ends meet.
Mrs Glacken says personal transport in rural areas is essential for families to attend work and medical appointments and with people returning to work in offices the fuel cost is escalating on budgets across the region.
Speaking on OceanFM, Mrs Glacken said there is pressure on families at the moment: "What I am hearing from members around the region, which is Donegal, Sligo and Leitrim, is that there is huge pressure coming on families and individuals with the cost of living which is soaring - it is reaching levels not seen since the 1980's.
Mrs Glacken said people supporting their shops and making donations is important. She urged people to call them if they are under financial strain and stress.
