Huge potholes and no start on new site cause frustration for bottle bank users

HGV parking is being blamed for causing enormous potholes at the Donegal Town facility

Construction has not yet begun on the proposed new bottle bank site for Donegal Town, close to Donegal Craft Village.

Cllr Tom Conaghan (Ind) put down the following motion at the May meeting of the Municipal District of Donegal: “Tom that this Donegal MD receive an immediate update from the environment section concerning the bottle bank in Donegal Town.”

The motion was seconded by Cllr Micheál Naughton (FF).

Cllr Conaghan said of the existing bottle bank at Drumlonagher: “It is taking away from the whole area. I would hope something would be done shortly. It is not acceptable in any town.”

The site is regularly used by heavy goods vehicles for parking and this has greatly damaged the surface despite it having been repaired several times by Donegal County Council.

In supporting his fellow councillor, Cllr Naughton said: “We have been on about this for ages. We have a site. I appreciate that there were concerns about it. People think it would affect the Craft Village, but it will be out of the way.”

The official response from Donegal County Council to the motion was that it was planned to liaise with the Road Department to build a purpose built Bring Bank and adjacent Sand Bag Depot at the same time. It is hoped that construction will begin in the coming months.
