Donegal Mountain Rescue Team hailed the assistance of Rescue 118 after the body of a man was recovered from Errigal mountain after an overnight search.

The team was stood down at 8.30am on Saturday after spending the night on the mountain where a complex search operation took place.

DMRT were tasked by An Garda Siochana at 10.20pm on Friday to assist in the search of a missing person in the Dunlewey area.

Rescue 118 was subsequently tasked to the area.

“Once on the scene and with the advanced equipment on board, the helicopter and the team were able to clear a larger area,” DMRT said.

“Once the area the team had of interest was searched, the helicopter was requested to search the side of Errigal.

“Again, with the helicopters advanced systems on board and night vision, they were able to locate a person on the side of Errigal and were then able to direct the DMRT to the person.

“With the use of 118's lighting system to light the area, a DMRT hasty team were able to locate the person and wait for the main party to arrive at the scene before their descent off the hill.”

Without the input of Rescue 118, DMRT said the search 'would have been a much more difficult and prolonged search'.

An Garda Siochana, the ambulance service, Malin Head Marine Rescue Co-Ordination Centre and Sligo airport were also involved in the operation.

DMRT added: “Without all these people working together, DMRT would not be able to operate.

“The Team would like to send our condolence to the persons family and would like to thank the family members who were at the car park who graciously thanked us for the work we had done. This means a lot to the team members.”
