Paddy Conaghan with a support team on Arramore on Sunday
Arranmore octogenarian Paddy Conaghan has begun a gruelling charity venture again.
On Sunday at around 2pm, Paddy plunged into the water on Aphort Beach on Arranmore in near-freezing conditions.
The 81-year-old will go clockwise around Ireland, taking in over 600 beaches before returning to Arranmore in mid-March, 2023.
It's all in the name of charity with five charities – four mental health beneficiaries, one in each province, and the RNLI – set to benefit.
Paddy's last 'ducking and driving around Ireland' fundraiser, when he completed the circumference of the country anti-clockwise, accumulated in excess of €112,000.
“On my last trip, everywhere I went people in all the local communities were extremely generous to me, offering accommodation, food, fuel and their support in swimming with me,” he said.
“Now I would like to give something back to all these communities to thank them for their support.
“I chose the RNLI also because I tried to get insurance cover and where are you going to get better insurance for saving lives at sea than the RNLI.
“This time, I will be staying in my van, thanks to sponsorship from Seamus and Louise Boyle, owners of the Arranmore Ferry.
His trusted sidekick, Elaine Barney Grady, is again on board as Paddy's social media ad promotions manager.
Elaine said: “Paddy is an inspiration to us all, doing this incredible challenge to raise awareness of mental health issues.
“He has connected with so many people, not just in Ireland but all over the world. We have had so many messages from people already wishing Paddy good luck.”
