Celia Imrie says Thursday Murder Club cast would return for a sequel

Thursday Murder Club actress Celia Imrie has said the film’s cast “all would” return for a sequel.

The movie, which is based on the series of books by TV presenter Richard Osman that follow a group of retirees who spend time solving cold case murders before they find themselves in their very own murder mystery, will be released on Netflix on August 28.

Asked whether she would be keen to return to her role as former nurse Joyce Meadowcroft, the 73-year-old told the PA news agency: “We all would, but we’re superstitious and we don’t want to spook things.

“But that’s a testament to how much we all had an unforgettable time, an unforgettable summer, it was, really.”

The film also stars Oscar-winning actress Dame Helen Mirren, former James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan and Gandhi star Sir Ben Kingsley, and is directed by Home Alone director Chris Columbus.

Speaking about a potential sequel, Columbus told PA: “It’s all based on how many people watch the film over the first weekend, and we will know in about 10 days if we’re making a sequel, and as far as I’m concerned, and I don’t want to speak for everyone else, but I would come back in a second.

“It was fantastic, and I would prefer to do two and three back to back, I would say, why not, you know we’re at the castle, let’s spend 100 days and make both films.”

The pair were speaking at the launch event for Royal Horticultural Society’s (RHS) The Thursday Murder Club: Unearth The Plot experiences in Wisley, which will give visitors to five of the society’s gardens the chance to step into the world of the film and solve their own crimes.

The event will run from Friday to August 28, with Columbus saying a nine-year-old child had come up to him at the event and told him “I can’t wait for the next instalment”, describing the moment as “really special”.

Osman has so far released four books in the series – The Thursday Murder Club (2020), The Man Who Died Twice (2021), The Bullet That Missed (2022), and The Last Devil to Die (2023).

The fifth book, The Impossible Fortune, is due to hit shelves in September.
