Dame Judi Dench and Sir Ian McKellen are to reflect on their friendship and respective careers in conversation at the National Theatre.
The veteran actors have starred opposite one another on both stage and screen, notably in the Royal Shakespeare Company’s 1976 version of Macbeth, directed by Sir Trevor Nunn.
The event, hosted by Downton Abbey actor Jim Carter, forms part of the inaugural season of director Indhu Rubasingham which includes the National Theatre debut of Gladiator II actor Paul Mescal, who will star in complimentary plays A Whistle In The Dark and Death Of A Salesman.
Dame Judi, 90, said: “I am utterly thrilled to be joining my very good friend Ian at the National Theatre, a place that has had such an impact on both our lives and careers.
“It’s a wonderful chance to celebrate, reminisce and possibly be a little bit naughty together.
“I am also delighted that Jim was brave enough to host us both, adding his warmth and good humour to the evening.”
Sir Ian, 86, added: “Judi and I first worked together nearly 60 years ago and have been firm friends ever since. Every time we meet up, I can look forward to love and laughter. And now with Jim Carter joining in, our event at the National should be exceptional. See you there.”
Dame Judi, who has won eight Olivier Awards and an Oscar, has starred in a number of plays for the National Theatre including the 1987 production of Antony And Cleopatra and The Importance Of Being Earnest in 1982.
Sir Ian, known for his roles playing Gandalf in The Lord Of The Rings trilogy and Magneto in the X-Men films, has starred in National Theatre productions that include a version of Shakespeare’s Richard III in 1990, and Coriolanus in 1984.
Also at the theatre this autumn, rapper Wretch 32 will present a theatrical adaptation of his latest album Home? in an event that will explore black British identity.
The British music artist, real name Jermaine Scott, said: “This moment for me is about more than just a show. It’s a continuation of my commitment to champion the arts and highlight the power of music and performance.
“Being able to do this with the support of Indhu Rubasingham and in such an iconic space is both a rare opportunity and a real privilege.”
Home? will be performed on October 23 at 9pm and is directed by National Theatre associate artist Clint Dyer.
The event with Dame Judi and Sir Ian will be hosted at the Olivier theatre at 4.45pm on December 19.
Public bookings open for Wretch 32: Home? at 10am on September 12, while tickets for Dame Judi and Sir Ian in conversation go on sale from 10am on September 19.
