Scotland defender Scott McKenna becomes free agent after leaving Forest

Scott McKenna is the latest Scotland squad member to become a free agent ahead of Euro 2024 after Nottingham Forest confirmed the defender’s departure following almost four years at the City Ground on Wednesday.

The 27-year-old centre-back joined the East Midlands club in September 2020 from Aberdeen for a fee of around £3 million. McKenna made 106 appearances for Forest and helped them win promotion to the Premier League from the Championship during the 2021/22 campaign.

However, he fell out of favour during the season just finished and spent the second half of the campaign on loan at FC Copenhagen.

Forest announced on Wednesday that McKenna would be leaving upon expiry of his contract this summer, along with Harry Arter, Wayne Hennessey, Cheikhou Kouyate, Loic Mbe Soh and Felipe.

McKenna is the fourth member of Steve Clarke’s provisional Euros squad to be confirmed as a free agent over the past fortnight after Southampton announced Stuart Armstrong’s departure on Tuesday and Rangers did likewise with Ryan Jack at the weekend, while goalkeeper Liam Kelly departed Motherwell at the end of the season amid reports that he is set to move to Ibrox.

Southampton forward Che Adams remains in talks about signing a new deal with the Premier League-bound Saints with his current agreement set to run out at the end of this month, while Liam Cooper’s contract at Leeds also runs out this summer, although no announcement has been made about the defender’s future.
